The ideal operating room for spinal surgery.

In the Spinal Center at the City Hospital No. 67 surgeons work in an "ideal OR" that has no analogs in Russia. It is one of three expert clinics in the world, which are constantly monitored by equipment manufacturers. Such monitoring help them to improve their devices based on surgical opinion.

Referral to the tomography and even more to the X-ray - here it is a relic of the XX century. No need to spend time and nerves of the patient: tomography can be done when the patient is already asleep on operating table. Today's patient has a serious fracture: bone fragment threatens to damage his spinal cord. The risk of paralysis is very high. To fix it, surgeons will cling to the adjacent healthy vertebrae, inserting implants - titanium screws. Special rods will be used to secure implants and take the load, giving the injured vertebra a chance to recover. This operation is not new. However, the way of doing it is unique. And not only because of the new equipment, but how surgeons combine it to receive the desired outcome.

There is no such second OR in the world as in Moscow Spinal center, without any exaggeration. Of course, there are clinics with the same equipment. But not in combination, like here. This OR has all set of equipment, and this is truly unique.

It would seem not that complicated - take the best medical equipment and learn how to combine it. But in reality it appeared difficult: no one but these people did it. At the international exhibition in Dusseldorf, the
system created in the Moscow Spinal Center was demonstrated as an ideal model for spinal surgery suite. The ideal position of the implant is determined in one step by the computer.

Defects of implant positioning in Moscow Spinal Center are virtually eliminated. Thanks to the interaction of robot and portable CT any flaws are corrected right during the surgery. With the patient leaving the operating room, no need to redo anything. No need for a new anesthesia, and no additional stress. Rehabilitation is shorter, and patient gets less radiation during surgery.

Dmitriy Dzukaev, Head of the Moscow Spinal Center said: "We had to put four screws. And it took us only 15 minutes without a single X-ray image. Typically, the installation of each screw requires from 2 to 15 X-ray scans depending on the case to accurately set the implant. Needless to say how high is radiation exposure in this case for the patient".

Moscow Spinal Center is not only the consumer but also a generator of ideas. It is one of three expert clinics in the world, which give advice to the robot manufacturer: what and how can be improved.
Anton Borzenkov, the neurosurgeon in Moscow Spinal Center: "The difficulties we face during surgery using these technologies, it is a negative feedback mechanism. And it allows us to move on, that is, create a new registration mechanisms, improve the software and 'hardware.'

But patients usually are not interested in these details. They are mostly concerned about the result and their fear. Spinal surgery is one of those procedures, when people are so worried about the outcome, that they do not decide until the last moment.

Dmitry Dzukaev says: "When patients see this state-of-art equipment, they usually calm down. It is a direct benefit to the patient. It is patient safety. Technology, robots are not susceptible to fatigue. They do not have a headache; they are not getting tired. Their hands do not ever shake. Therefore, the patient is sure in the safety factor and the lack of human factor, in its negative sense. "
For those who fear the uprising of robots, we also have something soothing: in a positive sense, the human factor remains.
In this technical environment, which was created in the Spinal Center, the main person is, fortunately, still a man, homo sapiens.
