AlphatecSpine held training for surgeons from different countries

AlphatecSpine, recently announcing a takeover of Scient'X, had held a training seminar (training in the anatomical theater) for surgeons from around the world. Russia was represented by surgeons from Moscow City Hospital No. 67 Dmitriy Dzukaev, head of neurosurgery department, neurosurgeon A.V. Aksenov and A.V Khokhlov, head of neurosurgery department at the Tula Hospital.


Training was focused on surgical treatment in elderly patients. The company presented OsseoFix* system for spinal stenting, OsseoScrew* transpedicular fixation system for patients with osteoporosis, with expanding screw, and ILLICO MIS System for percutaneous spinal fixation. 
The seminar was organized in anatomical theater at the University of Vienna (est. in 1365) - a historic building, perfectly equipped with modern devices, the same as in the modern spinal OR.  

Principal Lecturer - ORY KEYNAN, the neurosurgeon from Tel Aviv. Lecturers also came from Germany, France, and Portugal. After the theoretical part, lecturers shared their experience in new technologies, presented clinical results, observations and comments on the implants. Hands-on training began directly in the anatomical theater. Surgeons (16 people) were divided into two groups; each was assigned to a teacher..

Because we gained extensive experience in stenting and spinal vertebroplasty with implants of different manufacturers, we found this new stent implantation technique quite standard, albeit comfortable. One of the undoubted advantages includes reliability of stent expansion regardless of the time since the injury.

We were impressed by the percutaneous technique with ILLICO MIS System (the so-called percutaneous, from small punctures by 1 cm, without big skin incision). In comparison with the familiar system Viper-II, ILLICO MIS seemed technically less challenging and more understandable for installation and assemblies.

At the end of the course, the surgeons were offered a luncheon hosted by the library of the Universit - a pleasant surprise.

The course took place in an atmosphere of easy and friendly communication between all participants.
